Waffle maker - a device for baking wafer sheets used for making waffles. In modern waffle irons, which are made in both domestic and industrial versions, heating is carried out by means of an electric current, therefore they can also be called electric waffle irons. Initially, the waffle iron was heated over an open fire or in an oven, and it itself consisted of two cast-iron plates connected by a loop to each other, to each of which a handle was attached.
The appliance consists of two hinged cooking plates. Heating of the working surfaces of the device is carried out by means of tubular electric heating elements. The hinge device allows the upper part to be locked open. The hot plates are made of aluminum with a non-stick surface.
Before the revolution, in the Russian Empire, waffle iron was made by the Kasli iron foundry. The design looked like this: two metal handles connected to each other (according to the same principle as the parts of the scissors), to the ends of which, by means of riveting, cast iron cooking plates are fixed. A drawing or ornament was applied on the working surface of the slabs.
In the 80s of the XX century in the USSR, household electric waffle irons were produced by the production association "Spalis" ("October") (Lithuanian SSR). Their design features were the rectangular shape of the cooking plates and the ability to dismantle the work surfaces, which turned the device into a brazier for meat or fish.
