Nicely engraved antique bond certificate from Trans World Airlines, Inc. dating back to the 1960's and 1970's. This document, which carries the printed signatures of the company Chairman of the Board and Secretary, was printed by the Security-Columbian Bank Note Company, and measures approximately 9 1/2" (w) by 13 1/2" (h).
This certificate features a vignette of a female figure with a globe in the clouds.

Historical Context
In 1930, the TWA brand is born when Western Air Express and Transcontinental Air Transport merge to form Transcontinental and Western Air. The all-air transcontinental journey takes 36 hours including an overnight stop in Kansas City.
In 1933, Transcontinental and Western, to compete with United Air Lines and its Boeing 247, turns to Douglas Aircraft for a response. The DC-1, forerunner of the DC-3, enters service.
In 1946, TWA begins transatlantic service with the Lockheed Constellation in 1946. Just 4 years later, TWA changes its name to Trans World Airlines. In 1986, TWA acquires Ozark Airlines. In 1995, TWA introduces its new red, white and blue livery. A short six years later, American Airlines acquires substantially all of TWA's assets. Outside of repainting TWA's aircraft, TWA loses its separate identity by the end of the year.
