    Description

    Small souvenir silk ribbon commemorating Japan Day at the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition in Portland, Oregon.  Meant to be pinned through the ribbon to attach to the chest; the two small brown "blobs" appear to be something added to the surface to strengthen the fabric at those locations, for a straight pin to pass through.  Both the Lewis & Clark Expo and the subsequent 1909 AYP in Seattle had heavy promotion for trade with Japan and the rest of Asia across the Pacific, hence the declaration of a "day" celebrating this goal.  I would have to judge this as RARE, given the nature of the material used, which tended to age badly, and the lightweight construction.  Bright and clean with good color, no apparent fading (the printing used was not the greatest or most expensive process to start with), some light folds and a fray along one edge.
    The first I have seen in 25 years of living less than 100 miles from where the event took place
    , and being involved in World's Fair and Exonumia collecting/dealing during that period.  One of a number of similar Lewis & Clark items I am offering out of an old collection.
    I ALSO HAVE A VERY SCARCE GOLD MEDAL AWARD CERTIFICATE IN A FRAME AVAILABLE; this is too large to properly ship so is not listed on ebay. Interested parties can inquire.
